If you do find yourself low on health, jump into cover close to Peevish, keep an eye out for Darklings to shoot before they get near you, and wait for your health to regenerate. In addition, he loves to Swarm you, but you can basically just shake it off and get in 3-4 easy shots while he's laughing at your non-existent pain. Ammo is everywhere, but beware collecting it, as Peevish may have time to spawn Darklings. Make sure you keep the Model 1887 you are given at the start, as that gun is a BOSS when it comes to damage. Stay close to him and he shouldn't spawn Darklings, because he'll be too busy running.
